Valves control the flow of gasses and liquids. They may be pressure or temperature triggered, electrically operated, or manually controlled. Valves are often classified by the shape of their head – flat, mushroom, tulip, or semi-tulip. In aircraft engines, for example, this classification is especially important because different aircraft engines may require different shaped valves for the same function.

An aircraft can have dozens of valves operating within several different systems, including the engine, hydraulic system, and deicing system.

In the aircraft’s engine, for example, two valves are necessary for combustion. Within the cylinder, the intake valve controls the amount of air and fuel flowing. After combustion, the exhaust valve allows hot fumes to safely escape the cylinder.
