Aircraft Scavenge Pumps

In a car, used oil is able to drain down into the oil pan, where it can be circulated back through the engine or cooling system. But in aircraft, gravity or air pressure may not be sufficient for oil to drain on its own. For this reason, aircraft are equipped with scavenge pumps to help pull the used oil out of the engine into a reservoir for cooling, de-aerating, and recirculation. In hard-to-empty areas that are far from the oil sump, like the rear end of the engine, the scavenge pump prevents the pooling of used oil. The aircraft scavenge pump system does not have its own power source, but operates on a designated line from the main electrical system.

The number of aircraft scavenge pumps required to keep the oil circulating varies based on the size and oil capacity of the aircraft. Some aircraft have as many as four or five scavenge pumps operating in unison.
Symptoms of a scavenge pump malfunction can include oil coagulation, oil flooding the engine, or significant smoke coming from the area.
