Aircraft Starter Generators

Starter generators can be used on both turbine engine aircraft and helicopters. To start the engine, the starter generator pulls from the aircraft battery the electricity needed to begin turning the drive shaft. Once the drive shaft has brought the aircraft engine up to the specified RPM, the engine starts.

Once the engine starts, the starter component disengages from the battery. Then, the starter generator begins to generate voltage to replenish the aircraft battery. As the armature in the generator spins, creating an electrical current, several carbon brushes pick up that current and transfer it to the battery for charging. The starter generator can also supply power to other aircraft components.

Aircraft starter generators are equipped to self-cool through the use of a centrifugal fan on one end. As the generator armature rotates, air is pulled through the generator through small windows on the end of the rotor by the vacuum effect of the centrifugal fan. The hot air is then expelled as cooler air is automatically drawn into the system.
