What is an Aircraft Starter?
The purpose of the starter, as referred to when speaking about internal combustion aircraft engines, is to rotate the engine through the first few cycles until the engine can operate under its own power. Early 1900’s aviation engines were started by hand and later by electricity. A few even used an explosive cartridge!
Vincent Bendix in 1914 designed the 3 spline “screw” method of engaging and retracting the driving gear that turns the airplane engine. He got the Eclipse Machine Company to manufacture his invention. This is still one of the methods used today. In 1920, he patented the engine starter. By 1929 Bendix branched into aeronautics.
