What is an Aircraft Oil Cooler?

An aircraft oil cooler helps keep the aircraft oil temperature from spiking while the engine runs. If the temperature begins to rise, the oil will be channeled through a heat exchanger which uses either air or fuel to lower the oil temperature. Once the oil temperature is decreased to a safe level, it flows back into the system.

The flow of oil is controlled by a thermostatic valve. The valve will remain closed, continuing to reroute the oil back through the system, unless the triggering temperature is reached. Once the oil heats up, the valve opens, channeling the oil through a series of tubes that bring it into contact with the fuel or air.

Oil cooling is vital to the system to greatly enhance the aircraft’s performance. But often this key piece of equipment is overlooked until a major problem, like a crack or leak, arises. Over time, oil sludge and carbon can build up, reducing the efficiency of your aircraft oil cooler. If you’ve noticed that your oil cooler doesn’t work as well as it used to, it might be time to have it inspected.
