What is an Aircraft Tachometer Generator?
An aircraft tachometer (tach) generator is an electromechanical device used to electronically measure the aircraft’s engine or rotor speed. Because they rely on voltage measurements to gauge speed, they are extremely precise within their specified range.
A tachometer generator consists of two components, the tach generator component which is attached to the engine or rotor, and the tachometer which is located near the pilot.
Attached to the aircraft engine or rotor machine shaft is an armature. One end of this armature rotates within the magnetic field created by the tach generator. As the engine or rotor RPM increases, the voltage frequency created by the rotating armature increases at a proportional rate. This voltage is measured by a voltmeter circuit, which translates that voltage reading into a matching speed value displayed on the tachometer.
We overhaul tach generators on site and keep a large supply in stock for exchange. We are also able to test the Hall Effect tach transducers manufactured by Electro Mech.
