What is an Aircraft Turbocharger?
A typical aircraft turbocharger system consists of a turbocharger, a controller, a wastegate, and a pressure relief valve.
The turbocharger has two main component sections: a compressor and a turbine.
The compressor supplies higher than ambient air pressure to the airplane engine intake. The pressure varies according to the speed of the compressor. The compressor and the turbine share a common shaft. When the turbine rotates, so does the compressor. The turbine wheel is driven by the flow of engine exhaust gasses.
The turbo system controller uses temperature and pressure sensors to properly position the wastegate. The wastegate diverts the amount of exhaust to the turbine, thus controlling its speed.
The pressure relief valve is a safety device to prevent damage to your aircraft’s engine due to over boost.
