AOG, meaning Aircraft on Ground, is the abbreviation for an aircraft owner’s worst day— one stuck at sea level. And a grounded aircraft costs a lot more than cash. When your plane is grounded, you could be missing out on ideal flying days, wasting money on a hangar for a non-functional aircraft, or in the case of aircraft used for commercial purposes, losing significant profit for every day you can’t leave the runway.
What can cause an AOG situation?
Here are a few common reasons aircraft are grounded:
- Failed inspections. If your aircraft fails an FAA inspection, it may be grounded until the issue is resolved. A failure as simple as a faulty sensor or a broken light can result in your aircraft being grounded until you find and install a replacement part. This can be one of the most frustrating AOG situations— especially if the part is difficult to find or delayed in transit.
- Damage to the aircraft. If there is significant damage to your aircraft wings, propeller, body, or landing gear, it may be grounded until proper repairs are made. Depending on the damage, a repair facility visit may be necessary.
- Faulty components. Any critical component that isn’t functioning properly— from an inconsistent starter to a leaking fuel pump, can cause your aircraft to be grounded. And if you don’t have a new part on hand, you’re stuck waiting for a replacement.
While AOG situations are less common for well-maintained aircraft, if you’re not actively taking care of your plane, following your airworthiness directives, and having your aircraft routinely serviced, you’re likely to experience more AOG events— and lose valuable airtime in the process.
